Virtually everyone may benefit from hypnotherapy. As hypnotherapy can
be used to access a person’s inner potential and that probably no one is performing to their actual potential, then this answer is literally true. However,
it is not just potential which Hypnotherapy is well placed to address but also one’s inner resources to effect beneficial change.  In this regard, it is the innate healing capacity of our own body that may be stimulated by Hypnotherapy.

Consequently, the list of problems which may be amenable to Hypnotherapy is far too long and varied to catalogue but certainly includes:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Phobias
  • Disrupted sleep patterns
  • Unwanted habits and addictions (e.g. smoking, overeating, alcoholism)
  • Lack of confidence and low self-esteem
  • Fear of examinations and public speaking
  • Allergies and skin disorders
  • Migraine and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Additionally, it has proved of value within surgery, where normal anaesthetics have not been practical, in the wider sphere of pain management and in the areas of both sporting and artistic performance enhancement. In conjunction with other counselling techniques, it can also assist in helping to resolve relationship difficulties and be useful within anger management strategies.

I find it hard to relax/ I’m a control freak/ I struggle to switch off.
Can I still be hypnotised?

Yes. 1 in 10 people are what we call somnambulistic, which means they go into this trance-like state more readily than others. However this does not mean that the rest of us can’t go into that deeply relaxed hypnotic state. We all go into a natural state of hypnosis, or altered state of awareness every single day - for example, when driving in ‘autopilot’, ‘day-dreaming’ or being engrossed in a good book. Clinical hypnosis just uses naturally occurring states and behaviours and amplifies them.

During hypnosis will I reveal any secret or confidential information?
No. Not against your will. The hypnotic state is a conscious experience, where you’ll be aware and in control throughout. It is very often pleasant and deeply relaxing. All information will be completely confidential.

Will I be able to hear every word you say?
When you’re in the deep relaxed hypnotic state, you tend to either hear every word, or drift in and out of awareness. Everybody is individual, but your own unconscious mind will find a way which best suits you.

How does it feel to be hypnotised?
Each person’s experience of hypnosis will be unique. It will depend upon, for example, previous experience, expectations and motivation. It can be hard to describe because it is very personal and internal. So it would be like recalling a dream to someone, which can often be a pale reflection of what happened to you.
